For avid coin numismatists, the Gold Eagle coin is among the most coveted, mainly for its captivating design and high gold purity content. The U.S. Mint began producing Gold Eagles bullions in 1986 after the Gold Bullion Act of 1985 was passed. Since then, the Gold Eagle coin has become one of the highly sought among passionate collectors. To date, these Gold Eagles bullions are still produced in three offerings: proof Gold Eagles, Brilliant Uncirculated Gold Eagles, and Certified Gold Eagles.

Proof Gold Eagles

Initially produced as a set, these bullions served to check the dies of the minted coins and archive them. Over the years, the U.S. Mint began manufacturing several items to satisfy serious coin collectors’ curiosity. Since the Proof Gold Eagles are made using a special minting process, the result is a glossy finish that features a detailed appearance. Proof Gold Eagles have a sharper look with smooth flat parts, frosted details, and mirror-like presentation. These coins contain 91.67% of gold and come in four sizes: 1, ½, ¼, and 1/10 ounce. Silver and copper are incorporated into these coins to increase its durability.

Brilliant Uncirculated Gold Eagles

Brilliant Uncirculated Gold Eagles are the coins that bear no wear and tear marks because the mint directly ships the coins sealed in plastic tubes. As its name implies, it is not in circulation. These coins are available in different sizes: 1/10 oz., ¼ oz., ½ oz., and 1 oz.,  with face values ranging from $5 to $50. Like Proof Gold Eagles, these coins contain 91.67% of fine gold. The Brilliant Uncirculated Gold Eagles coins have a unique mark that bears symbols and logos that represent the minting facilities it originated from. It is much easier to get a hold of Brilliant Uncirculated Gold Eagles than Proof Gold Eagles because they are produced in bulk quantities.

Certified Gold Eagles

Certified Gold Eagles are the coins that receive authentication, grading, and certification from official grading companies like the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), and Independent Coin Graders (ICG). These certification companies are notorious for scrutinizing the condition of each coin before grading it. The grade may vary from 1 to 70, with 69 and 70 being the highest and signifying excellent quality. For those into collecting, the coins graded with 70 is the most valuable since it is extremely rare and has no visible imperfections even when magnified.

Since its offering in 1986, the Gold Eagles have been produced in uncirculated and proof coins, except in 1987, 2006, and 2009. In general, the production of coins depends on the demand for the coin series, and those produced in limited quantities are highly desired by astute collectors.
