History and Notable Achievements

1832–1867

Swiss watchmaker Auguste Agassiz founded Raiguel Jeune & Cie in 1832, along with partners Henri Raiguel and Florian Morel. After their retirement in 1846, Agassiz led the company alone. He later brought in his nephew, Ernest Francillon, who introduced innovative ideas, including a crown-wound pocket watch. Francillon took over leadership as Agassiz’s health declined.

1867–1878

Francillon transitioned the company from traditional watchmaking to modern manufacturing. In 1867, he opened Longines’ first factory in St. Imier, inspired by the local name “Les Longines.” With technical director Jacques David, they created the award-winning 20A movement. In 1876, David studied American factory practices at the Philadelphia World’s Fair, documenting valuable quality control methods.

1878–1931

In 1878, Longines developed its first chronograph movement, the 20H, patented by Alfred Lugrin. By 1880, Longines’ reputation for accuracy and quality led to frequent counterfeiting, prompting Francillon to trademark the Longines name and winged hourglass logo in 1889. Longines became the primary timing equipment provider for New York sports in 1886 and was used by explorer Prince Luigi Amedeo in his Arctic expedition in 1889.

1931-Present

In 1931, Longines collaborated with aviator Charles A. Lindbergh to create the Longines Weems watch for pilots. In 1982, Longines became the official timekeeper for Formula 1, and in 1984, for gymnastics events organized by the International Federation of Gymnastics. In 2015, they introduced the Longines Positioning System (LPS) for horse racing, providing precise data on horse positions, rankings, distances, and speeds during races.
