Breitling 101

Breitling was founded in 1884 by Swiss watchmaker Léon Breitling in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. Specializing in chronographs, Breitling quickly distinguished itself with a simplified chronograph model licensed in 1889, known for its easy manufacturing, maintenance, and smooth design. The company’s reputation for quality led to significant growth, necessitating a move to a larger factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1892, employing 60 dedicated watchmakers.

Breitling achieved several milestones in its early years, including developing an eight-day power reserve movement in 1893 and a highly precise chronograph in 1896. The introduction of a pulsograph with a logarithmic scale for measuring pulse rates was particularly lauded by doctors. By 1905, Breitling had also introduced a simple automobile tachymeter, enabling drivers and police to measure speed accurately, further demonstrating its innovative prowess.

After Léon Breitling died in 1914, his son Gaston took over, continuing the legacy of innovation by introducing the world’s first wrist-worn chronograph with a separate push-piece in 1915. Gaston’s introduction of a pocket watch with two chronograph pushers in 1923, which allowed measuring multiple successive times, marked another significant advancement. Following Gaston’s death in 1927, the company was managed externally until his son Willy took over in 1932, continuing to innovate with a two-pusher wristwatch patent in 1934 and a special aviator chronograph in 1936.

The Breitling legacy persisted through various ownerships, with Ernest Schneider acquiring the company in 1979. Under Schneider’s stewardship, Breitling continued to innovate until its acquisition by CVC Capital Partners in 2017. Over its history, Breitling has maintained its reputation for pioneering high-quality chronographs and has significantly influenced modern watchmaking with its numerous innovations.
